Chapter 13
I LEFT THE park and went back to the Tesla.
I hoped Liam would be waiting at the car, but he was nowhere to be found.
I got in the driverâs seat and was about to drive off when I noticed a folded piece of paper on the windshield. I got out and opened it.
As much as I wished that it were from Liam, I knew he wasnât the note-writing type. I opened it. No words, just an imageâa symbol drawn in pen. Two four-pointed crosses at the bottom of a box, with a third larger cross between them.
Someone had left it for me as a clue. I searched around for anyone, but the street was empty.
I took the Tesla past the SOJ, and Dean was right. It was packed outside with the news and groups of people. I slunk down in the seat and took the car into the park, then down the secret tunnel entrance. No parking on the street even with the NYPD parking pass; it was all through the bat tunnel now.
I opened the bay doors and drove in. I could see Nick and Dean at the conference table. I got out and walked over, noticing a ten-speed bike.
âOur fearless leader has returned,â Nick commented.
âWhoâs bike?â I asked.
âBradâs bike,â Dean said. âHeâs upstairs getting something to eat. Heâs walking on air, just to let you know. His marriage proposal went smashingly well. Janice accepted.â
âGreat.â I was unable to conceal my sarcasm. It was petty, but I didnât want to hear about anyoneâs good fortune. My relationship life was coming apart, and Bradâs seemed to be coming together.
Brad came floating down the stairs. He had a bowl of cereal in his hand, chomping away.
âLila, Iâm glad youâre here! I was just sharing with Dean and Nick about my weekend. Amaz! Janice is all in, and get this.â He was beaming. âWeâre getting married in six months because Janiceâs grandmother is in poor health. All this means that my priorities are going to be with the wedding and â
âIâm going to stop you, Brad, and not because I donât care about Janiceâs grandmother or your wedding plans.â I shut my mouth and slowed up. âSorry, first of all. Congratulations, thatâs wonderful news.â
âThank you, Lila.â He hugged me. âThat means a ton coming from you.â
âLook, I donât mean to spit in your cornflakes and spoil your good mood, but weâve got serious trouble,â I said. Brad glanced down at his bowl of cereal. âThe city is under siege, and we now know itâs a demon clan called the Orobas. They are behind some of the greatest atrocities in world history.â I had a feeling cataclysmic events were on the way.
âOh.â Some of Bradâs lightness left him. He set his bowl of cornflakes down on the table. âThis sounds bad.â
âLiam and I captured Kyle briefly. Heâs half-demon and apparently Jessâs boyfriend. Heâs been working for the Orobas, and heâs the one who is likely behind all these Dead City cases.â
âDid you find out why theyâre doing it?â Nick asked.
