Chapter 13

I LEFT THE park and went back to the Tesla.

I hoped Liam would be waiting at the car, but he was nowhere to be found.

I got in the driver’s seat and was about to drive off when I noticed a folded piece of paper on the windshield. I got out and opened it.

As much as I wished that it were from Liam, I knew he wasn’t the note-writing type. I opened it. No words, just an image—a symbol drawn in pen. Two four-pointed crosses at the bottom of a box, with a third larger cross between them.

Someone had left it for me as a clue. I searched around for anyone, but the street was empty.

I took the Tesla past the SOJ, and Dean was right. It was packed outside with the news and groups of people. I slunk down in the seat and took the car into the park, then down the secret tunnel entrance. No parking on the street even with the NYPD parking pass; it was all through the bat tunnel now.

I opened the bay doors and drove in. I could see Nick and Dean at the conference table. I got out and walked over, noticing a ten-speed bike.

“Our fearless leader has returned,” Nick commented.

“Who’s bike?” I asked.

“Brad’s bike,” Dean said. “He’s upstairs getting something to eat. He’s walking on air, just to let you know. His marriage proposal went smashingly well. Janice accepted.”

“Great.” I was unable to conceal my sarcasm. It was petty, but I didn’t want to hear about anyone’s good fortune. My relationship life was coming apart, and Brad’s seemed to be coming together.

Brad came floating down the stairs. He had a bowl of cereal in his hand, chomping away.

“Lila, I’m glad you’re here! I was just sharing with Dean and Nick about my weekend. Amaz! Janice is all in, and get this.” He was beaming. “We’re getting married in six months because Janice’s grandmother is in poor health. All this means that my priorities are going to be with the wedding and —

“I’m going to stop you, Brad, and not because I don’t care about Janice’s grandmother or your wedding plans.” I shut my mouth and slowed up. “Sorry, first of all. Congratulations, that’s wonderful news.”

“Thank you, Lila.” He hugged me. “That means a ton coming from you.”

“Look, I don’t mean to spit in your cornflakes and spoil your good mood, but we’ve got serious trouble,” I said. Brad glanced down at his bowl of cereal. “The city is under siege, and we now know it’s a demon clan called the Orobas. They are behind some of the greatest atrocities in world history.” I had a feeling cataclysmic events were on the way.

“Oh.” Some of Brad’s lightness left him. He set his bowl of cornflakes down on the table. “This sounds bad.”

“Liam and I captured Kyle briefly. He’s half-demon and apparently Jess’s boyfriend. He’s been working for the Orobas, and he’s the one who is likely behind all these Dead City cases.”

“Did you find out why they’re doing it?” Nick asked.
